Noise/Safety

We asked the following questions of New Bedford through a formal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

  • Please provide details on any noise testing that has been conducted.
  • Please provide details of any nose mitigation efforts that have been implemented.
  • Number of rounds shot by police at the range each year for the previous five years

Despite an obligation to respond, we have yet to receive answers to our questions.

Why does this matter?

The range is VERY loud. These are not just hand guns – police departments are training with high caliber weapons that are very assaulting. People miles away from the range can hear the noise inside their homes. It is terrifying.

The EPA recommends adopting sound management practices to mitigate noise pollution and community disturbances associated with shooting ranges. This involves implementing noise reduction measures, such as installing baffles or barriers, scheduling shooting activities during non-sensitive hours, and maintaining open communication with the surrounding community to address concerns. Adhering to these EPA best practices, shooting ranges can promote environmental responsibility, protect public health, and foster positive relationships with nearby communities.

What does the range sound like?

Listen to this video. Should anyone have to like like this? How is this fair?

How loud is loud?

Gunshots can be incredibly loud, reaching levels that are not just startling but potentially damaging to hearing. The sudden, sharp sound can be alarming to people, causing anxiety and stress, especially in those living near shooting ranges or other areas where firearms are frequently used. Pets, with their sensitive hearing, can be particularly affected, often experiencing fear or even trauma from the noise. Wildlife, too, can be significantly disturbed by the loud blasts, disrupting their natural habitats and behaviors.

The police even allow the use of very large-caliber military-style rifles. These can be as loud as 180 dB – this is 16x louder than a jet taking off!
